Relationship between muslims and non muslims
Relationship between Muslims and non Muslims
Islamic view point
August 3, 2008
This is one of the most important topics that Muslims should always speak about because we do interact with non muslims everyday, and so we should know how to deal with according to the Islamic teaching.
Allah said: " Thus We have apppointed you a middle nation, that ye may be witnesses against mankind, and that the messenger may be a witness against you....." Qu`ran 2:143.
How can we be witness against mankind without delivering the message of Allah to them? Allah does not only appoint us as witness over them, but He also honored us by making us the best of people ever evolved for mankind. He said:
" Ye are the best of peoples, evolved for makind, enjoying what is right, forbidding what is wrong, and believing in Allah. If only the People of the Book had faith, it were best for them: among them are some who have faith, but most of them are perverted transgressors. " Qur`an 3:110.
And so there is no honor without responsibility and your responsibility is to deliver the message of Allah to the entire mankind. " Of course to the best of your ability and knowledge."
And naturally, to deliver Islam to mankind you need to interact with non Muslims and show your best behavior to them as Allah instructed us.
" Invite (all) to the Way of thy Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching; and argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious..." Qur`an 16:125.
And so the life of the Prophet Muhammad[pbuh] and his companions is full of great examples on how should we deal with Non Muslims. Muslims at that time were able to conquer nations and lands not by the sword but by their good manners and behaviors, yes thats right, some lands were conquered without a single soldier. In fact, these nations were invaded by Muslim traders who carried goods and good manners/the teaching of Islam with them to Non Muslim lands and only these manners and nothing else to invade the hearts of millions of Non Muslims who later became Muslims.
So the question now is...Can we really establish a very good relationship with Non Muslims? Allah gives the answer in His Book.
He said: " Allah forbids you not, with regard to those who fight you not for ( your ) Faith nor drive you out of your homes, from dealing kindly and justly with them: for Allah loveth those who are just." Qur`an 60:8.
In a very simple language did not use the term ` good relationship' when refer to our relationship with Non Mulims, but rather He use the arabic word BIR to describe the highest relationship between Muslims andNon Muslims, because it include All Good things that a relationship must have, and also exclude all bad things that a relationship not to have. And thats why the schoolars of Islam repeatedly said that "BIR is the foundation of the relationship between Muslims and Non Muslims".
That verse was actually releaved when Asma' the daughter of Abu Bakr asked the Prophet Muhammad[pbuh] that " My mother came to me while she was still a polytheist, and who is ill disposed to Islam, she wants something from me. Shall I maintain relationship with her? And immediately theProphet [pbuh] replied, " Yes, maintain relationship with your mother."
So in short, Muslims should be fair, just and have the best relationship with Non Muslims who " do not fight against us on the account of our religion and do not drive us out of our homes" and this includes all people form all faiths.
Let us see how the Prophet Muhammad [pbuh] used to treat Non Muslims.
As we know, Abu Jahl was the greatest enemy to Prophet Muhammad [pbuh] , he dedicated his entire life to accuse and harm the Prophet [pbuh] , one day, a Bedouin Arab came to Mecca seeking help because Abu Jahl borrwed money from him and it seems that Abu Jahl was not willing to return the money back, and so the Bedouin approach one group of Non Muslims sitting near the Ka`bah and asked them, " who would direct me to someone who could help me to get my money back from Abu Jahl?"
Please Note: that the Arab man was Non Muslim; Abu Jahl was Non Muslim and the group near the Ka`bah was also Non Muslims, and so the Prophet[pbuh] has nothing to do with all of them and their stories.
And so the group wanted to have some fun so they told him ," Do you want someone to help you get your money back?" he answer " Yes" so they said: "do you know the best person for this role would be? Go to the man standing praying there". Who was that man? Muhammad[pbuh] . The man actually didnt realize what was going on, because the group wanted to create a fight Muhammad [pbuh] and Abu Jahl ,and so the natural reaction of anyone who is in quarrels with Abu Jahl is not accepting to interfere and make the situation worse right?
So the Arab went to Muhammad[pbuh] telling him " The people told me that you are the only one who can get my money from Abu Jahl, so can you come with me?" So the Prophet [pbuh] immediately answered " YES, lets go to him".Did you understand the lesson now? Helping people for the sake of Allah, should not be based on people`s religion being positive and brave towards people, can never be based on whether they are Muslims or not. Got the point now?
The story of the Prophet [pbuh] with this Bedouin is not over, he [pbuh] went to Abu Jahl home and knocked his door, Abu Jahl opened and found both of them, the Prophet[pbuh] asked him, " Did you take any money from this man?" he said " YES " then the Prophet[pbuh] told him " Give him his money back" and immediately Abu Jahl went inside his home and came back with the money of the Arab man and gave it to him.
Did the Prophet[pbuh] asked the Arab man to embrace Islam? No.
Did he embrace Islam later on? NO ONE KNOWS.
Because serving the society according to Islam does not mean to serve Muslims and neglect other people from different faiths.
Do you remember the Prophet [pbuh] when he accommodate the Christian of Najran in his mosque for several days? They came to ask him about his conception of God and after that, he fed them, he allowed them to sleep there and to even pray in his mosque. Do you know how to deal with Non Muslims?
Another example is of Propeht Yusuf[pbuh] who was accused and imprisoned beacause he desired to be always modest and not to commit fornication with the wife of the Egyptian King at that time. He was innocent, imprisoned for nine years unjustly;imagine the diffeculty that he faced in the prison while eveyone else outside knew for sure that he was innocent. But after nine years, they needed his help, because they knew that he is the only one that can interpret the dream of the King. Now please again note that Egypt at that time was Non Muslim country and it was immortal society and yet the entire town is going to face destruction based on the King`s dream and Yusuf [pbuh] interpretation of that dream.
Despite all the injustice that happened to him, Yusuf [pbuh] did not choose to ignore them and not to help since he had the solution, and before getting out the prison, and without putting any conditions , he immediately gives them the interpretation of the dream and the solution to it.
Why did he do that? Because Islam loves good for everybody, he helps them while he was imprisoned unjustly because this is Islam., we cant see someone in danger and give him our back even if he was Non Muslim. Will you call such a religion as `a religion of terrorism now?
So you remember how Prophet Abraham [pbuh] used to speak to his father when he was trying to invite him to Islam? Do you remember how respectful he was in addressing his Non Muslim father as MY FATHER....MY FATHER each time he talks to him?
Do you remember when Prophet[pbuh] and his companions were kicked out of Mecca? Do you remember when there families and their belongings were taken from them? Do you remember when they were thrown out in an open desert for three years? However...
Here came Muhammad [pbuh] back to his mosy beloved City, Mecca with more than 10,000 Muslims. He was finally able to enter his homeland without any fight or bloodshed and the offenders who persecuted him and his followers for years for years(i.e. Non Muslims) when they saw him approaching they thought that it was the time for him[pbuh] to revenge, maybe he will also take their belongings ,maybe he will take them as slaves or prisoners... but he[pbuh] told them " what do you think I am going to do to you now?" so they replied " You are a generous brother " then he told them " go you are free , and this day no one is going to harm you".
There is no other example in the history of mankind showing an excellent behavior towards his enemies a Muhammad[pbuh] did, and as a result , thousands of Non Muslims accepted Islam on this occasion alone.
Let us learn how to treat Non Muslims, let us follow our great leader Muhammad [pbuh], dont ever oppress Non Muslims!! Don`t ever wrong them in any shape pr form, dont place on them burden that they cant bear. Dont take anything from them unjustly or without their consent, because in such cases, the Prophet[pbuh] would support them on thr Day of Judgement. Listen to what he[pbuh] said:
" I shall plead on the day of judgement on behalf of a disbeliever who was harmed or whose due right was diminished or if more than bearable pressure was exerted on him or if something was taken from him without his consent by a believer."
Is that it? Not at all, we should be kind to Non Muslims in our daily lives and we should always:
1- Greet them, visit them in their homes and even in their places of worship but do not forget to invite them to our mosques also.
2- Offering them food, especially if they are your neighbors.
3- Congratulate them during their happy occasions; attend their weddings without taking any part of their retual practices.
4- Even if they sneeze and say alhamdullilah, you should say " May Allah guide you and make you in a good condition."
5- You should visit them when they are sick; pray for their recovery and guidance.
6- Share their sadness if they were afflicted with calamity like death, BUT DO NOT ASK FOR ALLAH`S MERCY ON THEIR DEATH.
7- You should also cooperate with them in all good things.
We whould also be aware of the following points when dealing with Non Muslims:
1- We should not show them, or feel inside ourselves that we are pleased with their disbelief.
2- We should never give them support over our own Mulim brothers and sisters if they might do injustice to them.
3- We should never imitate them in their rituals or forms of worship just to please them.
I guess our relationship with Non Muslims is very fair as prescribed by Allah and practiced by His Prophet[pbuh] .
We ask Allah to help us to get rid of our start to treat our peaceful Non Muslim friends with love, kindness and justice.ameen
