Welcome

Hi - I'm Mike the Projects Manager of Zorpia.

I'm afraid my Japanese is very poor! My best effort now is:

Hajimemashite! Dozo yoroshiku. Namai wa maiku des.

Bad huh?

Anyway - Zorpia would love to build a Japanese Zorpia - exciting huh?

We only have a small group of Japanese users now, but we know that if the site is in Japanese, you will tell your friends, and they can enjoy Zorpia too.

This group is to discuss what we will do, how you may help, and what you think is important.

A word of warning - dont expect a Japanese Zorpia in the next few weeks! It takes an enormous effort to translate a whole website, and we will need all the help we can get from native speakers.

Hi, Mike and You.

I am Small Windows Application Developer for hobbies.

Since the advertisement-oriented Japanese is troublesome, I want you to select a kind carefully. It is the greatest dissatisfaction. (example, Flashing Caution) .... and, I did join Royan Member.

Hi Hiroyuki. Thanks for your reply.

Wow! What kind of applications do you make?

I agree - adverts have to be selected carefully, some are ery annoying. We always review these.

Ok - I confess, my wife translated it for me. But I just dont wanna ban myself from this group!

Maybe part of my enthusiasm for creating a Japanese Zorpia, is that my wife is Japanese, and I have been to Japan a few times. Its kind of annoying to me that her friends are a little scared to join Zorpia, coz their english isn't that great. Solution www.zorpia.jp :)

I'd like to introduce you to three members of this group, who are not Japanese, but have a keen interest in this group.

Jeffrey: He is Zorpia's CEO. He has successfully run a big Japanese site before, and is very aware of the challenges.

Sean: He works on my team at Zorpia, coming up with new ideas and planning projects.

Calvin: He is one of our managers for our software engineers, and is helping to organize the translation process.

partnering with translation service websites like babel fish or google translate then working on a platform to display the site in almost every language? sounds like a programming nightmare though but translation isnt going to be easy with any language

ennnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn, i think its just a little bit weird about the English......

Thats the problem with those translation services - its OK for individual words... but for whole pages... its very odd sometimes.

I have a Japanese Sony Vaio, and sometimes I go to Sony's Japanese site for drivers etc. I use google translate... and even though it helps... it gives really odd english. Sometimes even humorous ... a bit like www.engrish.com

well yea thats coz it got translated by a computer -- there is no grammar -- it switches the word / character with the translated word, so the English is all wrong.

Buttons, links, instructions -- anything that can be written before the user goes to the website can still be in Japanese but for now instant translations from Japanese to English are really going to sound like that no matter what:

English:
I am going to buy an umbrella today.

Automatically Translated Text:
私は傘を今日買おうと思っている。

-- im sure my Japanese grammar is wrong? can anyone re-write the sentence with their most fluent Japanese? I translated it BACK to English and got:

(from) Automatically Translated Text (in Japanese):
私は傘を今日買おうと思っている。

(to) English:
I intend today probably to buy the umbrella.

--as you can see, a lot gets lost as soon as we stick them in these translation machines -- for the buttons and links well need to have the best Japanese posted up

Try this sentence
↓↓↓↓
今日、私は、傘を買いに行きたいです。

Came out pretty bad!

Japanese: 今日、私は、傘を買いに行きたいです。
English Tanslation: today, I the umbrella would like to go to buying, is.

I fed the translated part back into the system -- see what it comes up with

English: today, I the umbrella would like to go to buying, is.
Japanese translation: 今日、傘がある買うことを行くことを望むi。

Is that any better? Grammatically?

Hi Sean that is a good site. I actually used the similar software before and it was very helpful. Especially if you have tons of translations to do!
